Michael Herbert Dorn holds a Master of Fine Arts degree (MFA, 2018) from Lesley University College of Art & Design (USA), graduated with honors from the University of Maryland Baltimore County (USA) with a Bachelor of Arts degree (BA) in Visual & Performing Arts (with emphasis in Film/Video), and has studied traditional painting and drawing at ateliers in France and Italy.
Dorn's artistic practice combines many “traditional academic” forms and techniques with concepts and techniques appropriated from renaissance, neoclassical, modern, post-modern, and contemporary arts to assert a range of critical ideas uniquely descriptive of our diverse visual culture.
Michael's current major painting series entitled, SYLLOGY, combines painted color-inverted images of significant art historical paintings and "traditional European painting techniques" with intermedia elements including the use of digital mobile devices to view the exhibited paintings as digital "color-positive" images. This new painting series appropriates "canonical" European paintings in order to create and vitalize a new context for art historical and contemporary representation. [Additional paintings are in progress.]
The artist was born in St. George’s, Bermuda, and he is a citizen of both the USA and the UK. Michael resides in and works in Woluwe-Saint-Pierre, Belgium.
